Bomb Squad

The Conway fire department operates a bomb squad accredited through the FBI and all technicians have attended Hazardous Device School in Huntsville, AL. The squad was formed in 2004 after a 2 year study to determine the need for a squad in this area. This process was started by our late commander Jon McMahan. All techs are special deputy U.S. Marshals this gives us the ability to respond outside the state if called upon. 7 Techs are on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

We have a response area that includes Faulkner County as well as surrounding counties. We also have a statewide mutual aid agreement that requires us to respond anywhere in the state when called. The squad responds to an average of 50+ responses a year. These include recovery of stolen explosives, investigations, and IED (Improvised Explosive Devices) among others.

We are bound by strict guidelines set forth by the FBI and HDS. These include the training that is done, the responses that we make, and equipment that we use. We currently have two response vehicles one that stays in the city and one that responds outside the city. We receive funding through grants from FEMA.
